You can always count on Trader Joe’s to come up with the most unique frozen or packaged foods. Not that this is unique really. But I never expected to see battered halibut on the shelves anywhere, let alone one that is fully gluten free. I really didn’t have high expectations as battered fried fish is not something I ever grew up with. So keep that in mind while reading this review…

Ease Of Cooking (9.0)

Set it and forget it, well kind of. Pre-heat the oven to 450, toss them in once fully heated and cook for a total of about 14 minutes. Make sure to flip at the halfway point. This is as easy as it gets.

Food (9.5)

I was HIGHLY impressed with this. I honestly figured I would just grab a box, eat a few of them to really understand the flavor and texture and then write a review. Nope, I ended up happily eating the whole box. Upon my first bite, I was shocked at how amazing these were. I couldn’t stop eating them.

They tasted more like really good chicken fingers then they did like fried fish but I’m not sure exactly what the taste is supposed to be. As I mentioned, I never grew up with this kind of food. They weren’t flaky like I thought they were going to be. Firm but chewy in the right ways is how I would describe them. The batter held together very well too and tasted fantastic. The only downside is I didn’t have french fries to go with them, which would be a perfect pairing – as the box pictures.

Did I Get Sick (NO)

No problems here. I’m not even that full considering I devoured the entire box after already eating a post-workout meal.

Trader Joe’s, what don’t you do well? I mean honestly of all the foods I review I expected this to be the bad Trader Joe’s rating. So far, the lowest score from Trader Joe’s is their frozen cauliflower pizza and everything else has been fantastic as far as I remember. This is another fantastic gluten free product.
